To help communities tackle the most hazardous incidents first, every photo-supported litter report submitted to our platform is instantly processed by our Environmental Risk Engine. The system automatically calculates a dynamic risk score from 0.0 to 10.0, indicating the immediate urgency of the hazard to the local environment.
Inspired by enterprise vulnerability management standards (the Common Vulnerability Scoring System, or CVSS), our engine goes beyond basic volume counting. It evaluates the physical "attack surface" of a piece of waste by analyzing four core environmental factors:
Object Type & Material: Different materials pose fundamentally different levels of danger. The engine identifies whether an object is glass, plastic, aluminium, or another substance to baseline its chemical and physical profile.
Site Context: The surrounding environment drastically alters the real-world threat. The engine scans the background context of your photo to see if an item is sitting on a standard urban pavement, nestled in dry rural grassland, or positioned precariously next to a storm drain or active waterway.
Degradation State: An item's physical integrity matters. The engine assesses how weathered or broken down an object is. Heavily degraded or fragmenting materials score significantly higher because they present an immediate risk of microplastic shedding or toxic chemical leaching into the topsoil.
Threat Vector: This maps the specific danger pathway the item creates based on its location and seasonal timing. The framework calculates active risks such as seasonal wildfire ignition, waterway contamination pathways, or public health hazards.

The Risk: While still an eyesore, the material is stable, inert, and poses no immediate physical or chemical danger pathway to wildlife or local infrastructure.
